Approximately 1,200 employees of Butte Knitting Mills in Spartanburg found out Wednesday that they will be without their jobs within four weeks. Butte Knitt is a division of Jonathan Logan, Inc. of New York City. The change in fashion trends from knit fabrics to wovens caused the closure, according to company officials. Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., one of the nation’s most respected civil rights leaders, who survived a sniper attack last year, announced Wednesday he will resign as president of National Urban League to become a partner in the Washington, D.C. branch of the Dallas law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld. Sunny Alexander (Mrs. Wm.) expects to be in Landrum and Tryon next week. She now makes her home in Portland, Oregan. She is looking forward to seeing her friends here. The North Carolina Chapter, Cystic Fibrosic Foundation has announced the appointment of the following chairmen: Lynn, Mrs. L. A. Ravan; Pacolet Continued On Back Page Football Tonight Landrum at Polk Central The Landrum Cardinals will invade the Polk Central Patriots tonight with the kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Polk Central played well for three quarters against Chesnee last week and hopes to continue against the Cardinals. After an impressive pre-season play, the Cardinals were flat last week against Chapman. It should be a good game with Landrum coming out on top. Tryon Girl Netters Beat Gaffney The Tryon High School girls tennis team defeated Gaffney 6-3 Wednesday afternoon at Gaffney. The individual matches were as follows: Singles: Angela Covington (G) d. Sherrie Miller 6-0, 6-0; Wendy Manchester (T) d. Hayden Sellars 6-0, 6-2; Lisa Jolly (G) d. Jessica Lonnes 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, Brenda Keys (T) d. Angie Meetz 6-0,6-2; Kim Burrell (T) d. Nancy McConnell 6-2, 6-1; Carolyn Roff (T) d. Wendy Eden 6-1,6-3. Doubles: Covington and Jolly (G) d. ICC Continues Registration Polk Campus of Isothermal Community College is continuing registration for fall quarter until September 14. Some of the courses being offered are Accounting, Monday night 6:30- 9:15; Real Estate Fundamentals, Monday nights 6:30-9:15; Real Estate Finance and Investment, Tuesday, 6:30-9:15 p.m.; Real Estate Law, Thursday 6:30-9:30 p.m.; Typing (all levels) Tuesday and Thursday 6:30-9:00 p.m.; Business Finance, Thursday 6:30-9:15 p.m. For those who would like to take some general interest courses: Spanish I, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays: Geology, 6:30-9:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; Guitar, 6:30- 9:15 Thursday nights; Creative Writing 6:30-9:15 p.m. Tuesdays; As well as several sections of piano. Call for further information. During the day, an entire freshman program is offered (all credit transferable to senior institutions). Courses in the freshman program include Western Civilization, English Composition, Introductory Algebra, Physical Education, as well as many varied courses which are offered on Independent Study. Charges for NC residents are $3.25 per credit hour (most courses are 3 credit hours). Registration is open until Monday night. For further information call 859-5868.
